With two outs in the ninth inning, Minnesota Twins first baseman Chris Parmelee stepped up to the plate to face the great Mariano Rivera. Like so many before him, his night, and the game ended with a fastball.
“Strike three, ballgame over. The greatest closer in history now has the most saves in history.”
That’s how it was announced on the broadcast when Yankees’ closer announced his arrival into the baseball record books. On this day, the converted shortstop passed Trevor Hoffman as baseball’s all-time saves leader with number 602.
