Ever since his first suspension, California has not been kind to Manny Ramirez.  He was exiled from the Dodgers when he was sent to Chicago.  His latest comeback was delayed when he failed to show his previous power.  Now, his days of basking in the California sunshine are over.

Manny Ramirez has asked for, and been granted release from his minor-league contract with the Oakland A’s.  He was playing in Sacramento for the triple-a affiliate and asked that if they weren’t going to promote him soon to just release him.  As of yesterday, he is no longer an Athletic.

It didn’t take much money for Billy Beane to land Manny.

The 39-year-old Manny Ramirez has reportedly agreed to a minor-league contract with the Oakland Athletics.  The deal is believed to be for one season and pay the controversial slugger $500,000.  Now all that’s left is his 50-game suspension.

Last season, while with the Tampa Bay Rays, Ramirez chose to retire rather than face a 100 game suspension for violating the league’s performance-enhancing drug policy for a second time.  Late last year, he filed for reinstatement and had his suspension reduced to 50 games due to the consideration of the amount of games he missed when retired. Barring any game cancellations, Ramirez will be eligible to return on May 30th, his 40th birthday.
